An important focus of LEME’s activities is the organization of scientific events, such as lectures and seminars, to discuss topics relevant to the fields of Communication and Sports, bringing together researchers, professionals, and other leaders.

Among the main events held are the International Seminar “Copa América – 2019: Esporte, mídia, identidades locais e globais” (Copa America – 2019: Sports, Media, Local and Global Identities); the Seminar “Clube Empresa: histórico, impactos reais e abordagens alternativas” (Club Company: History, Real Impacts, and Alternative Approaches) –  2019; the online Seminar “#Maraca70: mídia, memória e patrimônio” (#Maraca70: Media, Memory, and Heritage) – 2020; Panel Discussion at Cinefoot 11 – 2020; the Webinar “Futebol, Sociologia e Comunicação – reflexões sobre a obra de Ronaldo Helal” (Football, Sociology, and Communication – Reflections on the Work of Ronaldo Helal) in partnership with Ludopédio and LESP/FGV – 2021; the Seminar “Agora é com elas: 30 anos da copa do mundo de futebol de mulheres” (“Now It’s with Them: 30 Years of the Women’s World Cup) – 2021; the Seminar “Virada Histórica: 100 anos o centenário dos ‘camisas negras’ e o racismo no futebol” (Historic Turnaround: 100 Years of the ‘Black Shirts’ and Racism in Football) – 2023; the Seminar “Nos Gramados da Democracia: reflexões sobre esporte e mídia” (On the Fields of Democracy: Reflections on Sports and Media) – 2023. VI LEME Seminar – Nos Gramados da Democracia (On the Fields of Democracy)
August 2023

The seminar On the Fields of Democracy promoted academic and transdisciplinary discussions regarding the relationship between democracy and sports.

The event featured prominent figures from the fields of communication, sports, media, and culture in panels held over the three-day event, such as Caco Barcellos (Globo), Marcelo Barreto (Sportv), Fabi Alvim (Sportv), Márcio Guerra (UFJF), Lívia Magalhães (UFF), Adriano Freixo (UFF), Renato Coutinho (UFF), Rosana da Câmara (UFF), and Cláudio do Carmo, president of the Associação Nacional das Torcidas Organizadas – Anatorg (Brazilian National Association of Organized Fan Groups). LEME researchers also participated, including coordinator Professor Ronaldo Helal (UERJ), Filipe Mostaro (UERJ), and Nicolás Cabrera (UERJ/CONICET). The panel topics included “Movimentos sociais de torcedores” (Social Movements of Fans) “Esporte, democracia e diversidade” (Sports, Democracy, and Diversity) “Futebol, política e memória” (Football, Politics, and Memory) and “Copa do Mundo, imaginários e jornalismo” (World Cup, the Imaginaries, and Journalism).

In addition to the panels, the seminar included three working groups: Esporte, cidade e identidade” (Sports, City, and Identity), “Mídia, esporte e identidade” (Media, Sports, and Identity) and “Estádios, arenas e modos de torcer” (Stadiums, Arenas, and Ways of Supporting) coordinated by Édison Gastaldo (CEP – Forte Duque de Caxias), Ana Viemeiro (UFMG), Fausto Amaro (LEME/UERJ), Camila Augusta Pereira (LEME/UERJ), Nicolás Cabrera (LEME/UERJ), Irlan Simões (LEME/UERJ), and Sérgio Souto (UERJ). Over 40 articles from authors across Brazil were submitted for presentation and discussion in the working groups.

Virada Histórica – O centenário dos “camisas negras” e o racismo no futebol (Historic Turnaround – The Centenary of the “Black Shirts” and Racism in Football)

June 2023

To celebrate the centenary of the “Black Shirts” and discuss racism in football, LEME held the seminar in August 2023. The event was part of the Supervised Internship course taught by Professor Fausto Amaro and aimed to discuss the repercussions of Vasco’s pioneering efforts and the current relevance of the debate on prejudice and inclusion in sports.

The panel included Antonio Jorge Soares, a tenured professor at the Faculty of Education at UFRJ, and Walmer Peres, coordinator of the Memory Center at Vasco da Gama Club. The mediation was conducted by Hugo Moraes, who holds a Ph.D. in Comparative History from UFRJ. The seminar was publicized in various academic and journalistic outlets, as well as on social media, attracting a large audience to UERJ to attend the lectures in the UERJ Auditorium.

 

V LEME Seminar – Agora é com elas: 30 anos da Copa do Mundo de Futebol de Mulheres (Now It’s with Them: 30 Years of the Women’s Football World Cup)

November 2021

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first official edition of the FIFA Women’s Football World Cup, LEME organized its fifth international seminar, titled “Agora é com elas” (Now It’s with Them). In addition to commemorating the date, the event also provided an opportunity to analyze some aspects of the trajectory of women’s football in Brazil and South America.

The event featured online presentations, divided into two working groups: History, Memories, and Resistances, coordinated by Leda Costa, and Women’s Football in the Tracks of Professionalization, coordinated by Carol Fontenelle. Twenty papers were received, discussing the historical and social dimensions of the trajectory of the football in Brazil and worldwide, the dimension of women supporters, and the obstacles and future horizons for women in various roles within the sports universe. The working groups held presentations and debates over two days.

Additionally, there were panel discussions on topics such as “Mulheres que inspiram outras mulheres” (Women Who Inspire Other Women) “Memórias em campo: o percurso do futebol de mulheres no Museu do Futebol” (Memories on the Field: The Journey of Women’s Football in the Football Museum) and “O futebol das mulheres na América Latina: visibilidade e investimento (Women’s Football in Latin America: Visibility and Investment). The panels featured speakers and mediators like Claudia Silva (Communication Consultant for the Ford Foundation in Brazil), Dilma Mendes (coach of the Vitória/Camaçari men’s team and the Brazilian women’s football 7 team), Silvana Goellner (retired professor at UFRGS), Camila Aderaldo (coordinator of the Reference Center at the Museum of the Portuguese Language), Angélica Angelo (cultural manager and educator at the Football Museum), Rafael Alves (editor-in-chief and creator of the Planeta Futebol Feminino website), Olga Bagatini (Communication Advisor at the Football Museum), Aira Bonfim (Master in History from FGV), Ana Lorena Marche (Coordinator of Women’s Football at the Federação Paulista de Futebol – São Paulo Football Federation), Julia Hang (director of the outreach project “Em direção a clubes inclusivos: jogar, gerenciar, treinar e dirigir com perspectiva de gênero para erradicar as violências” – Towards Inclusive Clubs: Playing, Managing, Training, and Leading with a Gender Perspective to Eradicate Violence”), and Camila Augusta Pereira (LEME/UERJ).

 

IV LEME Seminar – #Maraca 70: mídia, memória e patrimônio (#Maraca 70: Media, Memory, and Heritage)

October 2020

LEME organized the seminar to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the inauguration of the Mário Filho Stadium, the Maracanã, a neighbor of UERJ. Due to the pandemic, the event was held online. The program included debate panels and space for presenting academic papers. In total, the seminar received 60 extended abstracts, divided into three working groups: “Esporte, cidade e identidades” (Sport, City, and Identities) coordinated by Carol Fontenelle; “Mídia, esporte e representação” (“Media, Sport, and Representation)  coordinated by Álvaro do Cabo; and “Estádios, arenas e os modos de torcer” (“Stadiums, Arenas, and Modes of Cheering), coordinated by Irlan Simões.

The event featured three thematic panels: “O Maracanã na literatura e na arte” (The Maracanã in Literature and Art) “Os artistas do jogo e o Maracanã” (The Artists of the Game and the Maracanã) and “Maracanã: patrimônio cultural e palco de megaeventos” (Maracanã: Cultural Heritage and Stage of Mega-events), as well as opening and closing conferences. Among the mediators and speakers were Carol Barcellos (TV Globo), Vanessa Riche, Leda Costa (LEME/UERJ), Gisella Moura (Master in Social and Cultural History – UFRJ), Luiz Simas (Writer, professor, and master in Social History at UFRJ), Bernardo Buarque de Hollanda (professor at the School of Social Sciences at FGV and researcher at the Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History), Álvaro do Cabo (LEME/UERJ and Ph.D. in Comparative History – UFRJ), Edson Mauro (Globo/CBN), Luis Roberto (Globo/Sportv), Ronaldo Helal (LEME/UERJ), Vivian Fonseca (Coordinator of the Oral History Program and the History Teaching Degree at the School of Social Sciences/CPDOC at FGV and Adjunct Professor at the History Department at UERJ), Arlei Damo (CNPQ Researcher), Antônio Jorge Soares (Full Professor and researcher at UFRJ), Filipe Mostaro (LEME/UERJ), Juca Kfouri (Writer, journalist, and sports commentator), Marcelo Barreto (Sportv and master from UERJ), and Ricardo Freitas (Vice-director of the School of Social Communication at UERJ and coordinator of the Laboratory of Communication, City, and Consumption – Lacon).

The event’s promotion, through the hashtag “maraca70,” increased the reach of the publications, especially on Instagram. On this platform, LEME interacted with the official Maracanã profile, and the speakers promoted the event on their personal profiles.

 

III LEME Seminar – Copa América 2019: identidade, mídia, identidades locais e globais (Copa América 2019: Identity, Media, Local, and Global Identities)

April 2019

To promote a discussion about the football and sports phenomenon in general, the seminar centered the debate on the 2019 FIFA Copa América, held in Brazil, and the centenary of the Brazilian national team’s first international victory. The event saw wide participation from researchers across various Brazilian states and other countries.

The seminar’s opening panel, “Eventos e megaeventos esportivos na América: identidades e espetáculo” (Sporting Events and Mega-events in America: Identities and Spectacle) featured David Wood (University of Sheffield), Pablo Alabarces (University of Buenos Aires), Simoni Lahud Guedes (UFF), and was mediated by LEME coordinator, Professor Ronaldo Helal. Two other well-attended panels were “Cidade e Megaeventos” (City and Mega-events) with Ricardo Freitas (Lacon/UERJ), Rosana da Câmara (UFF), Gilmar Mascarenhas (UERJ), and mediated by Irlan Simões (LEME/UERJ); and “Cidades esportivas na América: História, mídia e política” (Sporting Cities in America: History, Media, and Politics) with Lívia Magalhães (UFF), Victor Andrade (UFRJ), Sérgio Settani Giglio (UNICAMP), and mediated by Leda Costa (LEME/UERJ).

The seminar included three working groups that received 33 papers, presented over two days. The working groups “Esporte, cidade e identidades” (Sport, City, and Identities) “Mídia, esporte e representação” (Media, Sport, and Representation) and “Estádios, arenas e modos de torcer” (Stadiums, Arenas, and Modes of Cheering) were mediated by Carol Fontenelle, Álvaro do Cabo, and Irlan Simões, respectively.

The seminar’s proposal led to the e-book “Esporte, mídia, identidades locais e globais” (Sport, Media, Local, and Global Identities) with articles developed from the extended abstracts presented at the working groups of the event. The e-book was organized by LEME coordinator, Professor Ronaldo Helal, Professor Leda Costa (LEME/UERJ), and researcher Carol Fontenelle (LEME/UERJ).

 

Seminar “Mídia e Memória dos clubes de futebol brasileiros” (Media and Memory of Brazilian Football Clubs)

November 2018

The seminar aimed to invite the public to a debate about the role of football club memory centers as important spaces for preserving not only the history of football but also the history of sports in Brazil. The event provided an opportunity to showcase the clubs’ memory conservation projects and foster dialogue between these institutions and the academic field of sports studies.

The event, held in a packed PPGCom/UERJ auditorium, featured representatives from the memory centers of Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, Esporte Clube Vitória, and Clube de Regatas do Flamengo. The panel included Adílio Jorge Marques (Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama), Walmer Peres Santana (Historian of Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama), Rodrigo Saboia (Heritage Manager of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo), Taísa Pires (Museologist of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo), and Gabriela Dias (Historian of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo). LEME researcher Irlan Simões moderated the debate.

 

Seminar “Mulheres Esportivas: Mídia, Memória e Representação” (Women in Sports: Media, Memory, and Representation)

November 2018

The seminar held in 2018 aimed to highlight the significant role of women in the history of sports. LEME proposed a debate bringing together researchers and professionals to reflect on factors related to women’s sports involvement and their struggles for equal rights and participation in spaces that still impose restrictions on female participation in the sports world.

The event featured three thematic panels: “Mulheres no esporte: história, memória e representação!” (Women in Sports: History, Memory, and Representation!), “Mulheres nas arquibancadas concretas e virtuais” (Women in Concrete and Virtual Stands) and e “Mulheres no jornalismo esportivo”” (Women in Sports Journalism). Participants in the debates included Aira Bonfim (FGV), Mariane Pisani (USP), Leda Costa (LEME/UERJ), Pamella Lima (UERJ), Rosana da Câmara Teixeira (UFRJ), Gustavo Bandeira (UFRGS), Penélope Toledo (Coletivo Mídia, Futebol e Democracia), Martin Curi (UFF), Fausto Amaro (LEME/UERJ), Carol Barcelos (Globo), Carla Matera (Escola de Rádio), Martha Esteves (ACERJ), and LEME coordinator, Professor Ronaldo Helal.

 

Documentary Launch Event “Segunda Pele Futebol Clube”

May 2017

The event marked the launch of the first documentary of LEME, “Segunda Pele Futebol Clube.” In 55 minutes of entertaining and humorous stories, André Larangeira (Botafogo jerseys), André Moura (retro jerseys), Arthur Guilherme (Brazilian National Team jerseys), Claúdio Burguer (jerseys from “small” teams in Rio), Márcio Adler (Fluminense and foreign team jerseys), Vítor Eidelman (Flamengo jerseys), and Paulo Pires (Vasco jerseys) share why they started collecting, the crazy things they have done, and how they acquired rare items for their collections. The film not only showcases seven fans deeply passionate about their beloved teams but also highlights them as true guardians of a heritage with immeasurable historical value.

The documentary launch event featured the film screening and a panel discussion with LEME coordinator, Professor Ronaldo Helal, and anthropologist Shirley Alves Torquato (LeMetro IFCS/UFRJ), who discussed cultural identities and consumption issues addressed in the film. The collectors who participated in the filming were also present, showcasing some of their most important jerseys and answering questions from the audience.

 

II LEME Seminar – Jogos Olímpicos, Mídia e Cultura (Summer Olympic Games, Media, and Culture)

December 2016 

In August 2016, Rio de Janeiro hosted the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, which had profound impacts on the city’s daily life and sparked numerous discussions in civil society and the press. In response to the growing amount of information, the event organized by LEME aimed to reflect on the legacy left by the Games and the perceptions of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro.

The seminar featured researchers and invited guests who are references in the field of sports. The thematic panels and forums took place in the auditorium of Faculdades Integradas Hélio Alonso, LEME’s partner in promoting the event. The panels included participation from Luiz Fernando Rojo (UFF), Débora Garaes (ESPN Brasil), Leonardo Maturana (Sportv), Victor Andrade de Melo (UFRJ), Martin Curi (UFF), Marcelo Barreto (Sportv), Tim Vickery (BBC – Sportv), as well as researchers from the laboratory, such as Leda Costa, Juan Silvera, Tatiane Hilgemberg, Hugo Lovisolo, and Álvaro do Cabo. The forums were divided into two thematic axes, “Comunicação, esporte e cultura” (Communication, Sports, and Culture) and “Comunicação consumo e eventos” (Communication, Consumption, and Events) featuring 10 presented papers.

 

I LEME Seminar – Copa do Mundo, Mídia e Identidades Nacionais (FIFA World Cup, Media, and National Identities)

September 2014 

In 2014, the year of its founding, the laboratory organized its first international seminar to discuss the 2014 FIFA World Cup, media coverage, and the cultural and identity impacts of the mega-event. The seminar featured forums, mini-courses, thematic panels, and lectures that brought together prominent researchers.

Among the invited guests were Pablo Alabarces (UBA), Édison Gastaldo (UFRRJ), Mauricio Drummond (UFRJ), Bernardo Buarque de Holanda (FGV), José Carlos Marques (UNESP), Luis Henrique Toledo (UFSCAR), Simoni Guedes (UFF), Martin Curi (UFF), Marcelo Barreto (Sportv), Lucio Castro (ESPN), Sidney Garambone (Globo), Wanessa Canellas (Rádio Globo), Márcio Guerra (UFJF), and Samuel Martinez (Universidad Iberoamericana de México), in addition to researchers from the laboratory, Ronaldo Helal, Fausto Amaro, Filipe Mostaro, Alvaro do Cabo, Francisco Brinati, and Hugo Lovisolo.
